Why Scent Work Is One of the Best Enrichment Activities for Dogs
A dog's nose is extraordinary — it's how they experience the world. Scent work puts that ability to use, and it's one of the most rewarding activities you can do with almost any dog.
What is scent work?
Scent work (also called nosework or scent detection) teaches dogs to search for and find a hidden item or specific odour — first food or a toy, then eventually a target scent. Searches can be in rooms, boxes, gardens, vehicles or outdoor areas.
The benefits
- Mental exercise: 15–20 minutes of searching can tire a dog more than a long walk.
- Confidence: dogs make choices and succeed, which helps nervous dogs enormously.
- Calm: sniffing is a naturally settling behaviour for many dogs.
- Teamwork: you learn to read your dog's body language and trust their nose.
- Accessible: great for seniors, dogs with limited mobility, and dogs on restricted exercise.
Which dogs suit scent work?
Almost all of them. It's particularly good for:
- High-energy dogs who need more than physical exercise
- Nervous or unsure dogs who need confidence-building wins
- Reactive dogs — dogs usually search one at a time, with space
- Older dogs who still love a job
- Scent hounds, working breeds and any dog who lives nose-first
Three nose games to try at home
1. Find it
Let your dog watch you drop a treat on the floor and say "find it". Build up to tossing it into grass, then hiding it behind a chair leg while they watch.
2. The box search
Set out 4–6 cardboard boxes. Put a treat in one while your dog watches, then let them search. Gradually hide the treat without them watching.
3. The scatter feed
Instead of a bowl, scatter part of your dog's meal across the lawn. It's simple, calming enrichment and great after a busy day.
Keep searches short and successful, and let your dog work it out without too much help — the thinking is the point.
